What do you make of the last chapter? Is this a happy ending for Huck and Jim?
I think that the last chapter is kind of good. Their are a couple of good things in this chapter and one bad thing. The good things are Jim gets his freedom. Jim gets chained up like a dog then finds out that someone cares about him because in Ms.Watsons will Jim is set free. Huck is just fine at the end. Huck goes back to the widow but wants to go on another adventure. Huck and Jim split up and go seperate ways.

Huck Finn 34-38
How does Huck start treating Jim now? Why?
I think Huck treats Jim a little different than he did earlier in the book. It was said that Huck thinks of Jim as a white person inside. Also in these chapters, Huck and Tom start making Jim do stupid things so Jim can escape. Huck agrees with Tom's idea that they should cut off Jim's leg to get him off of the chains( But they don't). The reason they want to do these things is because Tom thinks that Jim should be saved like people in stories were. Huck basically follows Tom's instructions on things they should do to save Jim.

What does Huck mean when he says “Human beings can be awful cruel to one another? What does Twain mean by having him say it?
I think that Huck means alot of things when he says this. He says this line because the Duke and the dauphin were tarred and featherd. Huck felt bad for them because at one point he was involved in their scam. Huck and Tom had agreed that what had happend was bad and if that happens a person feels bad no matter what. Twain means that many things that happend in the book were wrong. The main things is slavery. Like Huck it took people along time to actually view slavery as wrong. How do the King and Duke swindle the family at the funeral? Compare King and Duke to Huck? Who is the bad guy?
The King and Duke trick the Wilks family by pretending to be the three sister's long unseen uncles to get thousnads of dollars in gold. They convince them by telling them all the information they learned, and also telling giving back the money to the Wilk sisters so they can steal it back. I think the King and the Duke are similiar to Huck. They are scam artist like Huck, I think they trick people so people wont know their true identities. – Why does Huck want to help the men on the wreck? What does this show us about him?
I think Huck helps the men on the wreck because he has a nice side of him. Even though, those men on the wreck were robbers Huck still had some love or heart in him to save them. Blog – Is Eustace the ‘last American man’? Why or why not? Is that idea a good or bad one?
I think Eustace isn't the last american man because over the book he has changed into a controlling person who migrates from nature. Over the book I think he has turned in some way like his dad. He formed some of his dad's attributes like being very controlling and trying to have every thing perfect. I think there are many reasons why he loses his girlfriends but the main reason he lost them is of very controlling. An example of him being controlling is with Dauna in the forest. I also, think he has moved from the nature side is because it feels like he building all of these new industrial things and wanting to live in a house with ten kids.
Eventhough he seems controlling, I don't think of it as bad but I feel he wants to move on from this hardcore nature gut to a person who lives in the nature but doesn't do everything there. In conclusion, he dreams of something like a new life with a wife and kids.

Why do the apprentices dislike Eustace so much? Would you want to work for him?
I think the main reason why the apprentices dislike Eustace is that Eustace dosen't want anything to be messed up in Turtle island. Eustace wants them to be perfect and precise in what they do. He wants Turtle island to be perfect like his dream so he has to nagg the apprentices. If Turlte Island isn't supervised the correct way and if things are sloppy he wouldve wasted money.I Earlier, in the book Eustace gets angry because Donna didn't know how to cut a squirrel correctly. Eustace is stressed out, so he wants everything to be done perfect. It was rude of Eustace to tell his apprentices that they should pay him since they messed. He needs to understand how he treats people that work for him.
I would in a way want to work be in his apprenticeship program but not necessarily. The reason I would want to work for him is so I can reach perfection and by being nagged I will get things right; I would know what I was doing wrong. Why does Eustace want to ride his horse around country? What is a significant thing that happen on the trip?
I think there is a couple reasons why Eustace wants to ride a horse. Eustace first starts off talking about that he has ten horses, and I think he is use to horses living with him. He buys a young draft horse name Bonnie and learns how to command them. One Eustace thought that it would interesting to ride a horse he thought it would be really fun and a adventure. He thought it would be a adventure to see how far he could go with a horse. Also, it probally seemed he was more of a nature man if he rode a horse instead of a car. If he was in a car it would seem boring and not really nature like, like he was. One thing that happend. A important thing that happend on the trip was when Eustace met a guy in Georgia who told him a story of his life. It reminded Eustace of his earlier life when he was a child.

Blog – How does the increased pressure of running Turtle Island effect Eustace? How is he relating to the people around him?
Turtle Island puts alot of pressure on Nick in many ways. It starts off by him have to get the money in order to build Turlte Island, he has to worry about people selling him land that dont want to, super vising the land, and hiring workers to work for the land. When he hires the staff they have to be perfect or he gets mad at them for not doing things the right way he wants. He realtes to his dad by going to see him and spending time with him. LAM Chap 5 blog
Starting Turtle island helps Eustace in many ways. Turtle Island brings people to a place where they can figure out what it is to be an American, and it shows them what it feels like to live in the woods and hunt. Eustace through Turltle island can show people why he lives in the woods and that we as Americans dont't need material things. But, by making turlte island it was a big challenge 80,000 dollars and 180 acres. At first Eustace didn't find anyway to get the money. He thought of one person that could possibly help him, his father. His father gave him a loan to help with Turle Island. With his money and his father he could finish the island but it would be alot of work. In conclusion, this island gave Eustace a chance to speak to his father, and change kids lives by telling them what material things are and what a real American is.

Chapter 4 of Emersons Nature
In this chapter he talks about how Language is very similiar to nature. He states that there are three reasons why they connect: 1. Words are signs of natural facts, 2. Particular facts are symbols of spirtual facts, 3. Nature is the symbol of spirt. When he states that words are natural facts he means every word that people use are roots from another word. That makes them natural facts. Next, he says facts are symbols of spirtual facts- he trying to say that every fact is a symbol of some spiritual fact. Last Emerson talks about how nature is a symbol of spirt because we as humans are assisted by natural objects in nature who tell us many meanings.

I want to comment on his chapter 1 and 3 beauty passage. In this passage he talks about how the world is made with beauty. He says the earth had beautiful nature''But besides this general grace diffused over nature, almost all the individual forms are agreeable to the eye, as is proved by our endless imitations of some of them, as the acorn, the grape, the pine-cone, the wheat-ear, the egg, the wings and forms of most birds, the lion's claw, the serpent, the butterfly, sea-shells, flames, clouds, buds, leaves, and the forms of many trees, as the palm". Also he says that most of the individual forms are agreeable top the eye. In this passage he says the power of the eye is shaper of reality. Minority Organization group
What are your preliminary paper ideas? What groups do you feel should be aided or empowered?
My idea for my paper is a organization called CLD. It helps young African Americans that are in highschool become leaders. There are many programs that CLD offers for students. Some programs help communication, SAT strategies, learning skills, and presentation skills. I feel that many groups should be aided like homeless groups, African American groups, other minority nationality groups, and women social group. The group I feel that should be aided the most would be the poor and homeless. They need the most help because they are struggling in the world today.

Frederick Douglass
What does Frederick Douglass think of the Fourth of July?
Frederick had a strong opinion on the Fourth of July. He felt when the white man rejoiced and the slave thought of it as a sham. The slave thought of a sham because America is suppose to be celebrating independence and equal rights when things aren't equal. The holiday is for the white males of the United States instead of everyone. He states that America isn't a equal place, one of his examples he gives is " if a black male commits a crime he is subject to death; while only two of these same crimes will subject to like punishment". I think he try's to say that black males are likely to get in more trouble than white males are even with the same crime. In conclusion, the fourth of july is a day looked at as a awful day due to all the lies it tells.

The New Master and Mistress
I think this passage is one of most horrific shown parts of slavery. It shows a everyday promblem that happened in slavery. Alot of slaves that were women couldn't have any choice in sleeping with their masters, like Linda. In this chapter a new slave master comes in and takes over named Mr.Flint. Mr.Flint had property of Linda in the sexual way but was owned by his daughter. I would feel like a animal not worth anything because I would be owned by a little girl. Slaves get putdown so much and don't have self confidence, being hated cause of skin color. In conclusion, in this passage Mr.Flint treats Linda like she is worth less than every white person, and he trys to take her virginity away but dosen't.

Linda attains her freedom by getting freedom as a slave from the new Mrs. Bruce. Mrs.Bruce signed a paper stating that Linda was free. She has many mixed emotions from being a slave to being free. When Linda first goes to the north she feels that she is free but treated the same. She has to pay for a ride to get to New york and realizes that it cost alot of money. My comment in chapter 13, Church and Slavery.
In this chapter, Linda talks about how the slavemasters try to get the slaves to obey them and why they want them to obey. She states, the masters send the slaves to church so they can obey them and don't try to kill their masters. When Linda goes to church the only thing really that the reverend talks about is obeying masters. Rev. Mr. Pike says if you don't obey your master God will see you and it offends him.
I think the master and reverend are very ignorant and wrong for teaching slaves what they believe. Jesus and God don't want slavery in the first place but put slavery in the world for a reason. Thoughts from Linda about William
I think Linda is very close to her brother in some ways, but does'nt physically talk to him alot. Linda talks about how she sends him letters about how he's doing. I think Linda should be upset with the gold necklace chain. She gets upset because the necklace that she got symbolizes the chain that slaves wear. She means if your a slave you are in danger of getting your heart broken. If you love somenone the person could dissapear in any moment, sent off to another plantation , or killed. Linda as a child began to love her first mistress that cared for her, her mistress got sick and died. Notes to the State of Virginia” by Thomas Jefferson (handout)
·6 This essay presents a much different side to Jefferson than the man who helped write the Declaration of Independence. How can one person hold such conflicting opinions?
I believe that Thomas Jefferson holds such a conflicting opinion because he trully believes that he's right and he thinks it's the only way to do things. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
I think this statement is positive, I agree with the declaration of independence when it says all men are created equal, men should have equal rights. I also, agree that we are endowed by are creator ,God, with certain rights. We as Americans should obatian liberty and a pursuit of Happiness. As cittizens it tells us our rights of America, and other things we should have that makes us an American.

Thomas Payne
·2 Blog – Part way through the essay, Paine says that ‘panics can produce as much good as hurt.’ What does he mean by this? Do you agree?
On page 700 Thomas Payne talks about panics. When he says that panics can produce as much good as hurt he refers to panics in general, panics that nations have in war and panics we have as humans. He says that if people panic and aren't confident, the fear will cause them hurt because their on a panic attack. He refers to the English being in fear of the French fleet. He also states that panic comes for a short amount of time, and the mind gets use to them. I agree with his statment that panic can cause as much hurt as good. Panic is good because it causes adreneline, it makes you make a quick plan. If a nation, or someone is in panic they have to make a decision quickly without much thought. In conclusion, Thomas Payne was trying to convince the colonist towoards independence.
On page 700 Thomas Payne talks about panics. When he says that panics can produce as much good as hurt he refers to panics in general, panics that nations have in war and panics we have as humans. He says that if people panic and aren't confident, the fear will cause them hurt because their on a panic attack. He refers to the English being in fear of the French fleet. He also states that panic comes for a short amount of time, and the mind gets use to them. I agree with his statment that panic can cause as much hurt as good. Panic is good because it causes adreneline, it makes you make a quick plan. If a nation, or someone is in panic they have to make a decision quickly without much thought. In conclusion, Thomas Payne was trying to convince the colonist towoards independence.

Blog – What picture of Early American Puritan religion is Edwards painting? Is there much room for disagreement? How does that relate to our discussion of tolerance among the first settlers?
I believe he's painting a picture of strict religion. It came across, that if you didn't follow certian orders you would go to hell. Hell was a big part in this passage, he talked about how air was the only thing between us and hell. It felt like in the Puritan religion if you weren't great you would spend time in hell. I think that you can easliy dissagree, but during those times many people just went along with it. Like in our disscusion in class if you weren't with the chruch or disagreed in the church you would kicked out. Rules were very strict, you had to be like they wanted you too. My person Anne Hutchinson was kicked out cause she did her own thing with the Puritan religion. In conclusion, he wants to scare people in reilgion, he says if you don't believe in the religion you will go to hell at any time.

Class discussion
Class Discussion
In class we talked about many themes in the book Great Gatsby. One thing we talked about was the Title Gatsby and the chracter. The author F. Scott Fitzgerald new what he was going when he thought of the name Gatsby. In the word Gatby it has Gat in it which means Gun. Also we talked about how this book has alot to do with class. I think that class or how wealthy you are doesn't make a difference how your life is going to turn out your still going to have promblems. We talked about how this book deals with religion. Religion in this book is a material thing it's artificial. Gastby is viewed as a God by Nick and also by other people cause of his wealth. With the Dr. Eckleberg his eyes makes a comparison to God's eyes watches everything.
I believe that this book is based on material objects.

Chapter 9 blog
Blog – React to the attendance at Gatsby’s funeral. Why do the people who come, come? What is it meant to show us?
I am surprised about who all showed up to Gatsby's funeral. Nick remembered that Gatsby would have wanted a funeral so he planed one for him. There were many people who were in Gatsby's life that should of attended the funeral. Tom and Daisy didn't show up, Daisy was Gatsby's love and disrespected Gatsby in a horrible way for not coming to his funeral, neither did Meyer Wolfshiem or Klipspringer. Im angry how Kilpspringer sort of dissapperd and called Nick to get a stupid pair of shoes from Gatsby's house. This shows me that some people were just using Gatsby for what he had. Kilpspringer used him just to live in his house, and Daisy I felt was just playing with his mind to get what she wanted. The only peolple who attended were Nick, Gatsby father Henry Gatsby, Owl eyes and some servants. In conclusion, the only people that came were the people devoted to him and his true friends, this is meant to show us that some poeple aren't your true friends they might hand out with you cause your rich or popular. Last, people can't always have there dreams come true.

Blog – These chapters are the climax of the novel. Explain how something mentioned earlier might have hinted at this happening?
Eventually I thought that there was going to be a confrontation. Parts of the climax included in these chapters are Myrtle’s death, Daisy’s baby, Gatsby death etc. There are many things that happened in chapter 7 and 8. I didn’t really have a hint towards what happened but I had a feeling. I felt that after Myrtle’s death Mr. Wilson was going to find the killer but wasn’t going to kill Gatsby. More than one thing happened, but the big picture is that everybody can’t have what he or she wants. Gatsby was left without his true love Daisy.

Chapter 6
• Blog – Nick tells us the truth about Gatsby in this chapter. Speculate why Gatsby makes up the lie, and why Nick decides to tell us at this point in the book.
I believe Gatsby makes up those lies so people wont judge him for what happen. People might stereotype him that he didn't earn his money the corect way, that he got it from someone else that he met. Also, people might not want to be his friend cause he used to be a janitor and he dropped out of college. Mainly, Gatsby dosen't want to tell people because he dosen't want people to judge him and also for some of his friends, he dosent want to tell them that he lied. It would be to late to explain his real backround and if he did they might not ever talk to him. Nick decides to tell the readers at this point because its the right time. If he told it too early, the readers wouldn't have made a good judgement of Gatsby, if he told too late the book would be as good as it seems. Lastly, Nick didn't tell earlier beacuse he felt he didn't have the right truth about Gatsby but now he knows the real truth about him so he told.
In addition, the yacht he saw, who was owned by Codey, inspired him to make some some money but lots of it since he lived in the wealthy world. So he thought of a way to get the money to join to mob. ( that wasn't a main focus though). Also, Nicks wants us to feel how he felt when he figured out this big lie, after all they went through and what Gatsby shared with him thats why he telling us now.

Chap 5 blog
Nick says in this chapter that Gatsby’s “count of enchanted objects had diminished by one”. What is he referring to? How has Gatsby lost it?
I think Nick might be referring to his enchanted objects that he has shared with Daisy before he left for war. For instance, i think his object that was diminished was his collection of his English shirts.The shirts were diminished in a way because he longed for his girl Daisy. In addition, I think he can be referring to the object of friendship and material objects. Gatsby lost his objects because he did not see Daisy or talk to her for a while. Also, he has lost other objects that you can share with friends and people but since he dosen't have many freinds he can't share those objects. Gatsby has lost them, because the objects just become old and can't share them or apperciate them.

Chap 4 blog
What does Nick mean when he says There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired.
Nick means that everyone in the book has been pursued by the oppiste sex or the charcter is trying to pursue another. The others that are not trying to pursue others are tired or busy with things. In this book people that have been pursued are Jordan with Nick, Daisy with Tom and Gatsby etc. All the other short lined charcaters have someone that they would pursue or hooked up with another person at a party. In, conclusion most of the chracters are hooking up if there not hooking up with another chracter there tired or busy.
