What does Frederick Douglass think of the Fourth of July?
Frederick had a strong opinion on the Fourth of July. He felt when the white man rejoiced and the slave thought of it as a sham. The slave thought of a sham because America is suppose to be celebrating independence and equal rights when things aren't equal. The holiday is for the white males of the United States instead of everyone. He states that America isn't a equal place, one of his examples he gives is " if a black male commits a crime he is subject to death; while only two of these same crimes will subject to like punishment". I think he try's to say that black males are likely to get in more trouble than white males are even with the same crime. In conclusion, the fourth of july is a day looked at as a awful day due to all the lies it tells.
