Thoughts from Linda about William

I think Linda is very close to her brother in some ways, but does'nt physically talk to him alot. Linda talks about how she sends him letters about how he's doing. She really wants to get in contact with him physically. She is still in some part of slavery, while her brother was heard to be gone or escaped. Linda implies that she wanst to see him again. In conclusion, Linda had a strong relationship wit her brother but not physically.

• Blog – Why does Linda get so upset when her daughter is given a gold necklace to wear? What is she comparing that act to? Do you agree with the comparison?

I think Linda should be upset with the gold necklace chain. She gets upset because the necklace that she got symbolizes the chain that slaves wear. The necklace was given to her to make her think that she is going to be a slave for the rest of her life. She wants her daughter to be set free, and not be a slave for her hole life. I agree with the comparison because the necklace represents chains that slaves wear, the white masters and mistresses want them to think that they will be slaves for their hole life.

• Blog – Linda says there is danger in love for a slave. Why? Do you agree with her?

She means if your a slave you are in danger of getting your heart broken. If you love somenone the person could dissapear in any moment, sent off to another plantation , or killed. Linda as a child began to love her first mistress that cared for her, her mistress got sick and died. I agree as a slave it is not easy to love someone because they might have to leave you or get killed. A slave might be in love of a white person but might be linched if caught. In conclusion, it was very hard for a slave to love because it's dangerous.

• Blog – Why is it important that this book is truth, not fiction? Why is it important that the editor didn’t clean it up, either in terms of language or content?

It is important that this book is truth not fiction, so readers can understand what really happen in history with a black women instead of a idea of a white man. Since it's truth, we can learn what the character was thinking and the real side of a story. It's important that the editor didn't clean it up because if he changed the story the story might be different than from a slave position. If the story isn't cleaned up, it will have the real information of what happend wit the balck female slave. We need to see how the narrative language and content really was in early history.

Notes to the State of Virginia” by Thomas Jefferson (handout)

·6 This essay presents a much different side to Jefferson than the man who helped write the Declaration of Independence. How can one person hold such conflicting opinions?

I believe that Thomas Jefferson holds such a conflicting opinion because he trully believes that he's right and he thinks it's the only way to do things. He believes that slaves should be freed but should be in their own area with their own kind. He views them as lesser humans as whites and they shouldn't mix cultures, eventhough he had a black mistress. His main opinion is that white men rule the world.

Blog on Declaration of independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

I think this statement is positive, I agree with the declaration of independence when it says all men are created equal, men should have equal rights. I also, agree that we are endowed by are creator ,God, with certain rights. We as Americans should obatian liberty and a pursuit of Happiness. As cittizens it tells us our rights of America, and other things we should have that makes us an American.

Thomas Payne

·2 Blog – Part way through the essay, Paine says that ‘panics can produce as much good as hurt.’ What does he mean by this? Do you agree?

On page 700 Thomas Payne talks about panics. When he says that panics can produce as much good as hurt he refers to panics in general, panics that nations have in war and panics we have as humans. He says that if people panic and aren't confident, the fear will cause them hurt because their on a panic attack. He refers to the English being in fear of the French fleet. He also states that panic comes for a short amount of time, and the mind gets use to them. I agree with his statment that panic can cause as much hurt as good. Panic is good because it causes adreneline, it makes you make a quick plan. If a nation, or someone is in panic they have to make a decision quickly without much thought. In conclusion, Thomas Payne was trying to convince the colonist towoards independence.

Blog – What picture of Early American Puritan religion is Edwards painting? Is there much room for disagreement? How does that relate to our discussion of tolerance among the first settlers?

I believe he's painting a picture of strict religion. It came across, that if you didn't follow certian orders you would go to hell. Hell was a big part in this passage, he talked about how air was the only thing between us and hell. It felt like in the Puritan religion if you weren't great you would spend time in hell. I think that you can easliy dissagree, but during those times many people just went along with it. Like in our disscusion in class if you weren't with the chruch or disagreed in the church you would kicked out. Rules were very strict, you had to be like they wanted you too. My person Anne Hutchinson was kicked out cause she did her own thing with the Puritan religion. In conclusion, he wants to scare people in reilgion, he says if you don't believe in the religion you will go to hell at any time.

Class discussion

Class Discussion

In class we talked about many themes in the book Great Gatsby. One thing we talked about was the Title Gatsby and the chracter. The author F. Scott Fitzgerald new what he was going when he thought of the name Gatsby. In the word Gatby it has Gat in it which means Gun. Also we talked about how this book has alot to do with class. I think that class or how wealthy you are doesn't make a difference how your life is going to turn out your still going to have promblems. We talked about how this book deals with religion. Religion in this book is a material thing it's artificial. Gastby is viewed as a God by Nick and also by other people cause of his wealth. With the Dr. Eckleberg his eyes makes a comparison to God's eyes watches everything.
I believe that this book is based on material objects.
