Blog – What picture of Early American Puritan religion is Edwards painting? Is there much room for disagreement? How does that relate to our discussion of tolerance among the first settlers?
I believe he's painting a picture of strict religion. It came across, that if you didn't follow certian orders you would go to hell. Hell was a big part in this passage, he talked about how air was the only thing between us and hell. It felt like in the Puritan religion if you weren't great you would spend time in hell. I think that you can easliy dissagree, but during those times many people just went along with it. Like in our disscusion in class if you weren't with the chruch or disagreed in the church you would kicked out. Rules were very strict, you had to be like they wanted you too. My person Anne Hutchinson was kicked out cause she did her own thing with the Puritan religion. In conclusion, he wants to scare people in reilgion, he says if you don't believe in the religion you will go to hell at any time.
