Frankenstein Blog

Do you think Frankenstein went too far in his quest for knowledge? Or, more interestingly, is it possible to learn too much? What should Frankenstein have done differently? In a larger context how should we protect and safe-guard the advancement of knowledge.

I think that Frankenstein went that far in his quest for knowledge. I believe he went a little too far because he tried to play the role of God. I thought it was good that he went to college and wanted to gain all the knowledge he could from his professors. Also, it was smart to had the thought about creating life as a experiment. But he went to far when he tried to bring a human to life. If he would've just found a dead animal, rat, or even insect to bring to life it would somewhat OK. In our society we as people always do test on rats and other animals to see if certain drugs work or try to figure out if we can find a cure for something. In many of the experiments the animals die in the process. That why I believe that he should of brought a animal to life. Since he cut body parts from other humans and put them together to create another he went to far. He started to play the role of God when he created a monster from humans and distend himself form everyone in his life. There's really not a away to monitor or protect knowledge really except its illegal. The only boundary I would say that we should protect is with illegal items like weapons, bombs, drugs etc. People in other countries are taught how to build weapons and bombs only for killing. I think we should put a barrier on that so not just anyone can make these things.

Letter's 1-4

One way they are similar is how they both have nothing and are lonely. In the beginning Walton states he has no friends or anyone to talk to. He says he has no friend and when he is glowing with success and enthusiasm, there is no one share it with. Basically he has a struggle in finding a friend who he can share his sailing experiences with. The stranger is alike Walton because he has lost everything and no one to communicate with. They both have some sort of emptiness in there hearts.
Second, they are alike because of their voyages. Walton is a Captain of a ship and likes to sail. He stays on the seas for long amount of time. The stranger talks about how he was once in Walton’s position. He states that he was once was seeking for knowledge and wisdom like Walton is. Also, the stranger that Walton is pursuing the same course as he once did and the dangers with it. This means that the stranger views what Walton is going through. The stranger explains that he is going to tell his story to him because he sees where he is at in his life.
The too are different because the stranger is more wise and knows more than Walton. He has had many things happened in his life and once to explain them to Walton. I wonder what is going to happen next. Even though I know the story of Frankenstein is going to be told but will see.

The first method of torture that happens is the shock treatment. O’Brien questions Winston and tells him why he is in this predicament. He tells him that he is here because of his questions and non-beliefs of the society. This process is made for Winston to be a good Party member, learn what he thought was wrong, and to understand and accept the Party’s view of things. O’Brien tells Winston about how the society functions and how it will never be brought down. O’Brien has many conversations with Winston but the one that struck me the most was how the society is going to be in the future. O’Brien explains how harsh the future will be because their will be no relationship needed between friends, wives, and kids. He says that things will be much harsher and that the enemy or heretic of the society will always be there and is defeated. The results that Winston had thought this test were ok. He believes in O’Brien and but just repeats what he says so he won’t feel anymore pain. He keeps on asking why about everything O’Brien says. This shows that Winston questioned O’Brien because he didn’t understand at first. He realizes now about the society that it can never be fixed and will stay like that forever. He finally loves Big Brother at the end because he realized he is just limiting his self from freedom if he doesn’t like it. With him loving Big Brother he has won the victory over himself. I think the broader messaged is that things in our society can make up history or anything so that the society can believe it. Also, I think he could be saying that people that go against their government will always be ridiculed and looked down at and the only way for citizens to be free is follow the rules of the society and accept it. The last point he makes is that mostly all humans if put in a certain situation will give up what they love, like a person, to save themselves.

Post 8

First, it says that proles are associated to be the lower class. The high class in this society will always be high class, Inner Party, and in control. The book talks about how the proles aren’t in power and how the party runs but can’t be stopped. This happens because the citizens don’t know anything and are placed in their society. Like with war, they stay in war so people can stay ignorant and not really wonder and think about the other places like Eurasia and Eastasia. Winston caught the fact earlier that they were in war with Eastasia and not Eurasia. I think that this could alter his hopes for the proles because they really don’t have a reason to live and don’t know about anything. The Party job is to keep the proles stupid and they are accomplishing their task. They keep the proles in poverty and in darkness until they need to raise them up like when they showed the prisoners of war that one time. This theory does make sense because they control history to which no one knows and keeps everything in their society running basically by telling no one about anything that goes on outside their society. The Inner Party always stays in power because there are always new members being in the party and old ones going away.

Winsotn dream Post 7

The dream sequence talks about when Winston was younger. It explains a little bit about his childhood and how they seemed to be struggling without his father. The author presented imagery as if his family were proles and poor. He described his living state as a war zone with machine gun fire from the distance, enormous queues outside the bakery, and lots of rubble everywhere. His dreamed showed how he and other boys would pick out ribs of cabbage leaves, potato peelings from the streets and other foods. The leaving of his father made his mom’s physical states a lack of energy in every single thing she did. After this Winston had become really greedy. He wouldn’t be pleased with his sister’s amount of food so she would give him part of his sister food. This happened even when they’re struggling to get food and with his sister’s sickness. The impoverish conditions made Winston into an animal. His mom had given him most of a chocolate ration and he ended up stealing his sister’s and running away. After he ran away he was in the street for hours and didn’t know what to do. He came back and family wasn’t there. It took him a little while to get use to it but he did. This shows how much Winston misses his family and needs someone to talk to like Julia. He views that people are selfish now. It’s important to for the book because it shows how the society really doesn’t care about a single person just the community as a whole.
In conclusion, the society takes away a since of love from family and one another. He shares his love with Julia since he didn't have the experience with his mom.

Friday Blog: Wisnton and O'Brien

When it states he knew sooner or later they are talking about what Winston predicts about him. He talks about the sooner or later he is going to meet up with O'Brien some day. I believe that this quote comes from his dream when he is seeing him in the darkness. Also, he knows that at the Ministry of Love he will be killed or taken by the police. He knows that his rebellious days are probably going to end at some point with him taken by the police. O’Brien makes Winston think of his future. Winston knows that something is going to happen and it might end up putting him in the grave. I think O’Brien is some mysterious man undercover that is a spy. O’Brien has too much knowledge of Syme and other things that lead to him being part of Big Brother. I think O’Brien is going to end up getting Winston and killing him off. How could O’Brien appear randomly and talk about his good Newspeak he writes. Winston knows his fate and accepts what going to happen. I think he accepts this because you can’t hide forever of being a rebel. If you don’t accept it now it’s going to come back and bite you even worse.

Comparing Winston and Julia

Julia and Winston are more similar than different just because of their main focuses and plans to rebel against the society. I’m going to explain the main similarity but more differences of the two. They are similar because they are both are rebels. They go against the society and do it in a secret manner so they wont get caught. They know that they might be caught but still want to commit the crimes.
They are different in some ways. First, Julia has had more experience committing crimes and has been doing this longer than he has. She’s formed some techniques of talking without moving her lips so she can commit her crimes covert. She commits crimes because she believes its fun and the society/ party wont let her. Winston commits crimes because he takes pleasure in feeling like a rebel and doesn’t feel the society is right. Julia is afraid of death and wants to just have fun in life. Winston believes that death is going to happen even no matter what you do.
Next, they have different opinions of the Brotherhood. Winston believes that it could possibly exist due to the information he has heard in the past. He thinks that there has to be some type of rebel group that is going against the Big Brother. Julia has a different opinion on the matter. She thinks that there could be no such thing because it wouldn’t be planned that well and be bound to fail.
In conclusion, although more differences were stated they both have the same main goal of rebelling. Through this part of the book Winston is starting to really like Julia and wants to end up getting married in the future. But their lifestyle now doesn’t have any time for this because of the Hate Week and the trouble of being caught. We will see where their relationship goes … Till Next time.

Blog Post 4

Although the societies are different John and Winston are similar in their statements. In John’s society they want people to experience as much happiness as they can. In the Brave New World they won’t people to feel good so they give them all the sex they can. In Winston’s society they don’t want them to have pleasure in sex at all except for creating people.
The two people are similar because they want to rebel against the society and don’t agree with it. John thinks that the people should be able to believe in what they want to and learn about the history and scientific parts of things. He rebels in the society by killing himself and going against the treatment he is given. Winston also believes that his society of people should be introduced to their history (which would lead to the civilization falling). He rebels by committing crimes secretly like writing in a journal, keeping old things like the glass paperweight, and committing the crime of having sex for pleasure.
Winston is saying that his society is to good to be true because they make up all the rules at different times. He thinks that being to pure and perfect is a bad thing. This is why he wants to go against Big Brother because he knows that this culture is unbalanced. In addition, he likes committing these crimes cause no else does it until he finds out the Julia been doing it for a long time. He doesn’t like her because she’s had sex with a lot of men but likes her cause she’s been going against the society all along and other people have too.

Controllng the society

There are many ways that this society controls its citizens. The Big Brother tries to control the people's lives so it can prosper. They don't want people to know the past so they won't question the society. If they control the past they can control what happens in the present because the citizens don't know anything. First, they control the society through surveillance. They do this through the telescreens. If a citizen does anything they don't like they can come take him or her away and tourcher them or kill them. In the beginning of the day they make them do physical jerks which are exercises. They also use spies to spy on people to see if there doing any illegal activity. They control the past by Newspeak which is the news that can be changed at any time. Next, they change the records of the past to fit the present. To not remember current people they make people disappear like Jones, Rutherford and Aaron who were leaders of the revolution who Winston saw at the Chestnut Tree Cafe. Last but not least, they control the sex drive of the people. The only reason they are suppose to have sex is only for making children and not for pleasure. Junior-Anti sex league which is a group that doesn't have sex at all. The method is so effective because the people are so ignorant not knowing what is happening. They just go along hating Goldstein and living there lives.

Blog 2: 1984 Language to Freedom

Writing is a threat mostly because when you write in a diary you write about what happened in your day. When you do this your entry's become history and they don't want to keep written down history of every thing. They don't like them to keep photographs too because its history. He likes doing this because his curious about things and his dreams. Also, he likes writing in his journal because of his job. In his job he changes past information and documents to match present. In addition, he can write in his journal and put in the speak write and it would be gone. So looking at all the information and documents this gets him interested in writing. When your destroying words your deleting history and thoughts. When they all speak Oceania and speak the same language they can control them and everyone is the same. If they control peoples words they can make them say what they want them to. When people are not curious and intelligent the citizens are controllable and the society can function. The citizens can't remember the past and think about what happened because they destroy it. By controlling the present they control the past, by controlling the past the party can justify all actions in present.

Blog 1: 1984 the world

I think this world is made of fear and hate. It's made of fear because in their society you can trust anyone and everyone is afraid of everyone else. What makes people afriad so far in the book are the children, and the telescreen. People are scared of the children because they are insane and are like alien police. They are taught what not to do in their soceity and are present in seeng people get hung. Winston says that after two years Mrs.Parsons kids will be watching her day and night of symptomns of unorthodoxy. This shows how weird and scary children are in the soceity. Another thing people are scared of are the telescreens. The people of their soceity don't know who's watching them and when. The screens take up their privacy throughout their house because they are everywhere especially in their bathrooms. Since the evidence of most history is erased they can't write what happened to them in that day or they could be taken away. Hate also destroy's there soceity because everyday all the citizens meet up and scream at Emmanuel Goldstein, in the screen, who the cause for most of their promblems. They think that he is the cause for their problems.

World State good or bad

I think that the world state would be good but for the most part bad. I think that the state would be good because every one would be happy and wouldn't really know about death and other things that cause pain. The purpose of the world state is to limit pain and make everyone perfect. Although they are controlled and cant live their life they don’t know it so there is no pain. They live their lives thinking their society is perfect and are ignorant. The reason I believe this that this society is bad because they are not allowing people to live their lives without freedom. The people in this society don’t have the free will to think, make decisions for them selves. They are made without a history and a family. Without the two you can't really figure out where you came from or what has happened in the past. Like Lenina people in the society take soma when they don’t' feel good or want to get stuff out of their minds. They have no sense of problem solving for their selves. It is also bad because most of them can't experience the feeling of love being with a partner of the opposite sex or being loved by family. They like for everyone to be one and not have any personal relationship with anyone else. In conclusion, I think that this state is good because they don’t feel pain and don’t know how fake their society really is. The World State is bad because the society has no history, no personal relationships, and no free will.

Predictions of Huxley

The predictions that have come true from Huxley’s prediction: Test tube babies. He talked about in his society babies come from test tubes and then are injected into the mom sexual organ. In their society babies are born this way because they don't want them to have actual mothers or families. Test tube also prevents people from getting diseases into having sex and all the women getting pregnant. What has not happen in his prediction are every one being in one society and worshiping the same God, which is Ford. Also, they haven't really stopped the process of aging. We have surgeries and pills but nothing to stop aging completely. Lastly, they also we have not stopped the form of disease in people which is basically impossible to do. Their society is perfect from allot of things but not as perfect as they think. Their is at least one flaw in everyone’s society a big flaw in their is history (like Monds) and individuality.
